Robert Redford died yesterday.

His publicity firm announced he died in his sleep at his home near the base of Mount Temponogas.

He was 89.

Redford starred in these big blockbusters like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance

Kid, all the president's men, the way we were out of Africa. He was a Hollywood icon who

managed to leverage that clout and popularity to champion independent film. He won an Oscar for

directing ordinary people in 1981. He founded the Sundance

Institute, which helped create the Sundance Film Festival, and played a key role in transforming

American cinema. Redford was an environmentalist. He was a political activist. He received

the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

And he was a Utah, at least part-time, maybe more.

The film scholar Andrew Nelson told us Redford's affection for the state came out in some of his films and ideas.

He told us a story about the making of the movie Jeremiah Johnson in 1972.

It's a film I really like, and it seems even the Redford didn't direct it, I guess the more personal project, because so much of it is filmed in the remote wilderness of Utah, which by that point he had discovered and was falling in love with.

And part of the impetus for making Jeremiah Johnson was to see what type of movie you could make in Utah that didn't mask Utah, have Utah try to pretend.

It's something. It wasn't.

I like the picture a lot.

And I think it probably of his few western, tells us a little bit more about him.
