Located just north of Alton is the community of Godfrey, which is named in honor of Benjamin

Godfrey, a former sea captain, real estate developer, railroad builder, banker, and integral

part of the underground railroad, among other things.

There are a lot of towns that are named after people in Illinois, and most don't really

deserve it.

Benjamin Godfrey does.

Captain Godfrey's country estate was located in what's now the town named after him,

and much of his land was devoted to things other than farming during his lifetime.

The most important, he always believed, was the women's college that was located there.

In its early years, it was called the Monticello Female Seminary, but today it's Lewis and

Clark Community College, and it's become known not only for the quality education that

it offers, it's also known for its resident ghost, and this is her story.
