On the evening of July 9, 2009, a little after 7 p.m., a red van pulled into the yard of 66-year-old Bird Billings, who went by his middle name Bud, and Bud's wife, 43-year-old Melanie Billings.

Bud and Melanie lived in a $700,000 nine-bedroom mansion near the small town of Bula, Florida.

That's just west of Pensacola, in an area of the country that is known as Florida.

This was a well-known family. Bud was a very prominent local businessman. He had run a lot of

different businesses over the years, including a strip club, a car lot, and a financing company.

But really, he and Melanie were best known for their big family.

Between them, they had 17 children, including several children from their previous relationships,

and they also had 13 adopted children. And all of those children were dealing with different

types of disabilities. Some were emotional and others were physical. Some of the children were

non-verbal. Bud and Melanie had made caring for those children their life's mission. Five masked

men jumped out of that van. They were armed to the teeth.

They were dressed head to toe in black. They were wearing black masks and black boots.

The local sheriff would later describe their clothing as ninja style outfits. The assailants

kicked in the door of Bud of Melanie's house and went inside. A few minutes later, shots were fired, and then

the home invaders ran out and fled the scene. A few minutes after that, a neighbor of the

couples named April Spencer heard someone pounding at her door. She realized that it was Bud

and Melanie's 11-year-old daughter, Adriana. She knew Bud and Melanie

well. In fact, April had seen them just a couple of hours earlier. She later told investigators

that everything had seemed completely normal at Bud and Melanie's house. But the little girl,

Adriana, was hysterical. She kept saying that her mom and dad were dead.

So April ran over to Bud and Melanie's house.

She went inside and found her friends lying in the master bedroom.
