Friday, June 19, 2015, began as a beautiful day for 68-year-old grandmother Shirley Carter.

She was at home with her husband, Bill Carter, and they were on their farm in a remote area of Lacona, Iowa.

Shirley and Bill had been married for 52 years.

They worked together every day on their family farm, which had

900 acres of soybean and corn. Bill and Shirley Carter had three grown kids. They had two sons,

Jason and Billy Dean, and a daughter named Jana. Jason also worked on the farm with his parents.

In addition to their work on the Carter farm,

Jason and Bill also had separate contracts, which they hauled in 18-wheel or trucks.

On that morning, Bill and Shirley went out early together, between 7 and 7.30 a.m.

They went to the general store to get coffee, just like they always did.

Shirley had regular coffee and Bill had decaf. Investigator spoke to a neighbor named Donald,

who testified later that he saw Shirley and Bill. He said they seemed completely normal,

like nothing was out of the ordinary. He said that on that coffee run,

the couple had seemed happy and relaxed. Bill drove back to their farmhouse at 132 Perry Street

and dropped Shirley off. Then he left the house again at around 7.45 a.m. He was headed to drive his

truck and haul corn.

He told Shirley that he would be home between around 11 and 1130.

After Bill left the house, Shirley continued her long list of daily chores, which included cleaning and feeding the hogs.

Shirley's phone records show that she made a call at 8.46 a.m., which was the last time that anyone

ever heard from her. Both Bill and his son Jason Carter's hauling route involved driving back and

forth from a processing facility. It was called Cargall and it was located in Eddyville, which was
