The CDC is standing by their K-12 school masking guidance for now,

despite the fact that multiple states are lifting their indoor max mandates.

Gene Allen, founder and CEO of the Center for Education Reform, has been studying innovative education for decades. And she joins me now to discuss pandemic-era schooling

and where we go from here for The Untold Story. Jean, it is great to have you with us. I know this is

something you've been working on for decades and very passionate about

school reform across America. So thank you for being here. Thanks for having me, Martha.

So give everybody just sort of a thumbnail sketch of your background and how you come to this work.

Well, in the last couple of years, we've been all over the effort to bring about more innovations to make sure every

child's getting educated no matter where they are but that comes on the heels of 28 years having

founded and run the Center for Education Reform having developed a lot of the policies and programs

that many of the nation's governors and state legislators now are home to

that give parents more power, teachers more autonomy, schools more accountability and

communities reassurance that schools okay in some places. It doesn't happen everywhere,

which is why I'm not yet out of a job.
