This is the BBC.

I was at a book launch earlier this week chatting to some old friends,

including the author who worked with me at the BBC not just years ago,

but two even three decades ago.

And someone reminded me of a memo I wrote way back,

turns out it was in 1987,

when I was a young assistant producer working on a politics show called On the Record.

And I wrote a memo for the editor,

man called David Orronovic,

you may have read what he has to say from time to time.

I wrote a memo saying that Europe would split the Tory party,

like the Corn laws had split the Tory party more than a century ago.

Truth is, I'd just been a rather clever Magpie,

been out to lunch with a Tory MP who told me the point,

and I'd written it down.

We'll be talking this week about why those Tory European splits are back.

And why someone else might be back as well.
