I've taught often about contentment and even written the book learning contentment, which I commend to you.

There's one whole chapter on discontent, and it's still all true. I checked.

But today I'm going to discuss how destructive discontent is in our own lives and hearts, in our marriages and families, in our

jobs and callings, particularly in marriage, though. Discontent leads to poor decisions, unwise,

ethical choices, foolishness, and many other sins. Discontent can tear countries apart and it fuels wars. Where does civil

unrest come from? Discontent. Why did countries go to war with one another? Discontent feeds the

envy and competition, the grudges and the animosity, and war eventually breaks out, tearing countries apart.

What war ever began with contentment?

Not one that I know of.

Marriages and families break up because of discontent.

Doug and I were talking recently about how many times we have heard of a professing Christian woman who divorced her husband

because she was just so unhappy.

Years of ingratitude, comparisons, dissatisfaction, and bitterness,

all growing in the soil of discontent finally brings the marriage to a terrible end.

And the aftermath is never pretty either. And the discontent actually

never ends at the divorce. It carries right on. Now, sometimes, and probably far more often than

divorce, at least I hope so, but wives just carry discontent around with them in their marriage

for years and years.
