Summary

It's become rare to hear Israelis and Palestinians in conversation with each other during these last, painful months. Yonit and Jonathan bring together Israeli former intelligence analyst Dr Michael Milshtein and the Palestinian activist and commentator Samer Sinijlawi for a candid discussion of what happens to Gaza and Israel 'the day after' - and ask if that day is ever coming. Plus: Benjamin Netanyahu resists pressure from inside and out to agree a hostage deal - while his son Yair picks up a coveted award. -- Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/unholypodcast/Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1150578065793142See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, an encounter that has become vanishingly rare on Unholy, a dialogue between a leading

0:07.3

Israeli analyst and a leading Palestinian activist on what happens next in this war, what comes

0:14.4

the day after. It's Unholy. I'm Jonathan Friedland of The Guardian in London.

And I'm Unite Levy of Channel 12 in Tel Aviv.

This week saw, I think, a return of what Israel wants to be in a way in a daring and cunning and successful operation to hostages were rescued live and well. Louis Har and Fernando Mirman, they were rescued in an operation the police commissioner called

0:55.0

an Entebbe-style operation, Israeli Special Forces, a dramatic overnight raid.

1:00.9

And, you know, one of those moments where you see the pictures, you hear the news, I think

1:05.5

were hugging and protecting them as the fire broke out. And again, this is Israel as we want to be,

1:19.4

right? Soldiers going in, protecting them with their bodies, bringing them back home alive.

then looked at Israel, as this heroic, plucky David against Goliath nation engaged in, you know, almost impossible

1:46.7

courage and ingenuity, then the sort of dissenting note that shows how things have changed

1:53.0

since then is I really did notice in the coverage, outside Israel, a change even within the

1:58.7

few months of this war, because when hostages had been freed

2:02.7

through military operations before, there was some of that admiration in the coverage.

2:06.8

This time, very quickly, attention went on reports that there had been a decoy operation

2:13.9

in order to divert Hamas' attention by the IDF, and that that decoy operation had

2:20.4

involved some 60-od Palestinian deaths to enable the release of those two hostages.

2:29.0

And I just thought, okay, that's interesting how central that was in a lot of the coverage.

2:33.9

It suggested to me it went with the grain of sort of decreasing patients on the part of the world,
