Summary

As part of our effort to help STR hosts become and stay more profitable, we continue in our series of shows helping STR owners win with direct bookings. David interviews Arthur Colker, owner of Stayfi, a company that helps collect guest information to allow you to market directly to them to get future stays. Arthur started as consultant for STR owners, recognized owners didn’t have good ways to connect with guests who loved their property, and came up with a solution. Arthur shares how OTA’s are controlling the hospitality industry, how this is bad for both guests and hosts, and how Stayfi is helping equip owners to fight back against this with direct bookings. supportive business, a fascinating model, really cool person. He's here today to talk about

0:17.9

what you can do to improve your business. A very difficult market. And I am

0:22.7

thrilled to have them. Arthur, welcome to the show. Yeah, thanks for having me, David.

0:27.2

No, thank you. I'm sure you're a very busy man running companies. I know exactly how that goes,

0:31.8

especially at a time when real estate in general is struggling. It is hard to make a dollar in today's market. So I appreciate

0:39.7

you taking some time to be here. Can you just take a brief minute to introduce yourself? Tell us

0:44.2

about your company and why you started it. Yeah. So I started Stafi back in 2018. And my background

0:51.8

was originally in marketing and consulting. So I was being hired by large short-term rental property managers to help them develop independent brands and break free from the big OTAs like Airbnb and VRBO.

1:06.3

And so when I was working with these businesses, I realized one of the biggest gaps that they had

1:11.4

is that they had no ability to access guest data. So as I'm sure you know, Airbnb doesn't share

1:18.8

things like emails with you of guests. Now it doesn't even share phone numbers with you.

1:22.8

So it's very hard to retarget the people that stay and love your properties to get them to come

1:27.3

back and

1:27.8

book directly for their next day. So that was the big challenge that I discovered in that experience,

1:33.8

and so I developed Stafi originally to address that. So we took a technology that I'm sure

1:38.7

everyone's familiar with in hotels, in coffee shops, and airports, where when you join the Wi-Fi, we have this

1:45.0

captive portal where you log in and have to provide your name, email, phone number, other information.

1:50.1

We were the first company to take that and bring that into short-term rentals.

1:53.9

So that means when you have a group of adults or just a family or friends staying in your property,

you can not only collect emails from the
