I'm sitting down again today with Mr. Max Hillebrand.

And we're going to continue our journey into the Ethics of Liberty written by Rothbard.

And today we're going to start talking about the inner contradictions of the state. So I'll open this with Rothbard's

opening line in this chapter. and he says, quote,

a major problem with discussions of the necessity of government is the fact that all such discussions necessarily take place within a context of centuries of state existence and

state rule, rule to which the public has become habituated.

So it's really hard to talk about the inner contradictions of the thing that is taken as a certainty,

I think, in the minds of most people.

As you were just telling me offline that actually the very next line,

he says, the rye couplings of the twin certainties

and the popular motto, death and taxes,

demonstrates that the public has resigned itself

to the existence of the state as an evil,

but inescapable force of nature

to which there is no alternative.

But that's just not the case, right?

I mean, this isn't a foregone conclusion.

We have thrown off the yoke of institutions before.

So why haven't we done this with the state yet?

Yeah, that's such a big question.
