Summary

Walter Plotnick is a photo-based artist who lives and works in the Philadelphia area. He received his MFA from University of the Arts and BFA from Tyler School of Art. My current work is a hybrid of wet photography and digital process. I am influenced by the work of Bauhaus, Constructivist and Surrealist Photographers from the 1920s through the 1930s. I make photographs and photograms by constructing temporary still lifes, using vintage found objects and images on top of photographic paper in the darkroom. 0:57.7	to different approaches to the art of making imagery.
1:04.3	It's just far too easy to look at YouTube videos and look at instruction books and to follow techniques that have been established by some other person. And it allows photographers to fall on the trap of
1:10.4	becoming pretty homogenous.
1:13.2	And that's really unfortunate because I think that the medium is a device and a means for being
1:18.6	able to express one's personal vision. And sometimes the way to get there is not going to be
1:24.8	found in a YouTube video or in a book or in a magazine article.
1:28.3	It's going to involve the artist, the individual person, going out there and experimenting,
1:32.3	making mistakes and really exploring what the possibilities are.
1:36.3	Because sometimes the technique or the approach that that individual is going to need
1:41.3	in order to express something unique and very, very personal is not going
1:46.0	to be found in a magazine article or in a video or an instruction book.
1:50.6	It's only going to come out as a result of that photographer or that artist really just
1:55.5	finding that voice and the means to express that voice on their own.
