Though any visit to one of these photographic forums online may reveal a population of

mostly men who want to talk about and argue about gear, the reality is that there are a lot of women out

there who are picking up the camera and finding ways to express themselves with it.

Women have always been a big part of photography, even during times when it was really

considered a male-dominated art form.

There were plenty of women picking up the camera and doing just wonderful and amazing things with it.

And it's no less so now.

The internet, the opportunity to dialogue and network with other photographers has resulted in a lot of women not only picking up the camera and making photographs, but connecting to each other and creating an

amazing support group for the creation and the art of photography. Today's guest, Sarah

Allegra, is a photographer who I met recently, and she is part of that generation, people

who pick up the camera and they start experimenting on themselves in

terms of putting themselves in front of the camera.

So they're both the subject and the photographer.

But eventually it evolves into something much more substantive.

It's more than just capturing these selfies, the term that's often used when you're taking a picture of yourself,

particularly with a cell phone.
