Summary

After a short-lived tenure as a junior high school teacher and coach, then a flirtation with filmmaking, Will Jacks finally settled in on a career as a photographer. Eager to get started, he left Journalism graduate school in 1996, even though he was only a few hours shy of receiving his degree. His business has grown to serve a diverse clientele of commercial and editorial clients throughout the southeast, and his personal work is represented in several galleries in the region. In addition, his documentary work of the Mississippi Delta is a prominent part of the Viking Range permanent archives. Will is also active in the photographic and arts communities, serving as a past executive board member for the Delta Arts Alliance, a governor-appointed board member of the Mississippi Blues Commission, and as a judge for the ShootQ Grant, among others. He also owns and operates a small photography gallery focusing on imagery from the Mississippi Delta, and just this spring has re-enrolled at the University of Mississippi in order to finally complete his Master’s Degree. He and his wife Jamie, as well as their two pound puppies, Sam and Homer, live part-time in the Mississippi Delta and part-time in the French Quarter of New Orleans. www.willjax.com www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

When I think about the images that really spur my interest, they often revolve around images that are taken very close to home.

0:56.8

You know, you can always think that the best photographs are made when people go to exotic locations or distant lands.

1:02.8

But when I look at a lot of the personal projects that are being made by hundreds of photographers all over the world,

1:08.7

most of those images are really almost taken literally in people's

1:12.1

backyards. There's something about having familiarity, access to one's own community that allows

1:18.4

photographers to produce some really exceptional work. And today's guest, Will Jax, has been doing

1:23.6

that with his project portraits of a juke joint that he's been doing in the

1:28.0

Mississippi Delta. The work started off as an editorial assignment, but he's kind of taken that

1:33.8

as sort of the launching pad to really explore the people and the community and the dynamic

1:40.1

that exists around this particular juke joint known as Poe Monkeys' Lounge down there in Mississippi.

1:47.4

And when you take a look at these images and when you hear the story that we're going to share here on this episode,

1:52.4

you really have an understanding of why some photographers really end up making some images that are so different from a lot of the work that's out there.

2:01.8

As you'll hear, this is a destination that many photographers go and make images

2:06.0

because of the reputation that this particular juke joint has.

2:09.3

But Will has been doing something a little different in the fact that he really challenged himself

to produce images that not only were different from what the other photographers were
