Summary

Joshua Mann Pailet was born in New Orleans in 1950 and raised in Baton Rouge, LA. He graduated from Rice University in 1972 and 1973 with a B.A. in Economics and a B.S. in Accounting. In 1973 Pailet founded A Gallery for Fine Photography to create a venue to collect, display and sell 19th and 20th Century photographs. He taught at Louisiana State University (Spring 1977). Though he has photographed locations across the country, the greater body of his work revolves around the city of New Orleans, which has allowed him to document life there for the last several decades, especially the years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. You can discover more about Joshua, his gallery and his own work by visiting his website. Joshua Mann Pailet recommends the work of Josephine Sacabo and Louviere + Vanessa. didn't my wife and I have a wonderful vacation, but it was just a great opportunity to pull out my

1:07.3

camera and make a lot of images. The city is just, just marvelous. And as you well

1:14.0

know, the events of the hurricane about seven or eight years ago was really a devastating one for

1:19.1

that city. But it's been managing to build itself back up, not just in terms of its infrastructure,

1:25.5

but also in terms of what's been happening with the people.

1:28.8

And one of the things that I wanted to do when I went down there was to have an opportunity

1:32.5

to talk with a photographer who lives in that community.

1:37.5

And today's guest, Joshua Man Pele, is just such a man.

1:41.9

He's also the owner of a gallery called the A Gallery, and it's a gallery

1:46.2

that he started back in the 70s at a time when fine art photography was not considered to be fine

1:53.4

art. The market for such work was not considered on par with what was happening with paintings

1:59.0

and sculptures. It was pretty much thought about as a collection of snapshots that, you know, might be able

2:06.1

to procure a couple hundred dollars, but not the tens of thousands or millions of dollars

2:10.5

that artwork was going for at the time.
