Summary

Julia Dean is a photographer, educator, and the founder of the Julia Dean Photo Workshops. Julia received a Bachelor of Science degree in photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master of Arts degree in journalism at the University of Nebraska. She began her career as an apprentice to pioneering photographer Berenice Abbott. Later, Julia was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York. She has taught for 29 years at such places as the University of Nebraska, Los Angeles Valley College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Santa Monica College, the Santa Fe Workshops, the Maine Photographic Workshops, Oxford University and the Julia Dean Photo Workshops.

1:27.1	I really appreciate you taking the time to appear on the show.
1:31.1	We got a little background noise that we're going to have to contend with here,
1:33.5	but that's okay because there's actually a working dark room in this space,
1:37.3	which is kind of cool.
1:41.4	I was reading about you, and I saw that you had a formal education in photography and photojournalism.
1:48.2	So that tells me that you had an attraction to photography before you got into school.
1:53.9	So why didn't you tell me a little about the inspiration that got you into this business?
1:59.9	Into the business of photography as a photographer or as a school?
2:03.9	Well, photography, period.
2:05.1	Oh, okay. Well, geez, that started so long ago.
2:09.0	And fifth grade, my parents gave me a camera.
