Summary

The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 49 Critical Theory evolved out of a pathological hatred. This hatred isn't just what you expect. Yes, the Critical Theorists hated capitalism, like all Marxists, but they hated something new about capitalism compared against their predecessors. They hated that capitalism works. Critical Theory, the tool of neo-Marxism, therefore grew out of the pathological hatred of the fact that "advanced capitalism," as they call it, which is protected against monopoly abuses, allows the working class to "build a better life." Having a good life, you see, stabilizes them. It takes away their revolutionary will. It makes them love their society and want to maintain it. It, in their view, turns them conservative, and this is intolerable. Prosperous, functioning societies became the target of their bid for cultural revolution in the 1960s. To execute this revolution, though, they needed a new base for revolutionary energy, a new proletariat to awaken to Marxian revolutionary anger. Herbert Marcuse, architect of the New Left, found that new proletariat in identity politics, laying the ground in which the Woke Identity Marxism of today would eventually take root. 0:32.4	I guess, I mean, we've kind of spaced them apart a little bit and made them fit into the space.
0:36.5	It's been a little bit since I've actually sat down and properly recorded anything and so I'm
0:41.4	excited to be back here at the microphone as a piece of housekeeping. If you don't know, I have been
0:46.3	writing a book. I got pissed off in the middle of July and I decided there needed to be a definitive
0:52.7	book that explains critical race theory all the way. So I wrote one. I wrote most of it in about a
0:58.2	week and then I've started to flesh that out. Clean it up and I'm now pretty happy with the draft
1:05.2	that I have so hopefully I can get it through editing and get it out to you soon. It's fairly long
1:12.0	and it's fairly detailed. Introduces critical race theory explains what it is. Defines it. I know we're
1:18.2	not allowed to do that or not supposed to be able to in a multitude of ways that I think are all
1:23.1	clear and overlapping and then it explains it as a belief system and talks about its ideological
1:30.9	roots, how it operates and some things we can do about it. So look forward to that and that's what's
1:36.8	been the delay in recording more podcasts except for one possible other thing which is that
1:43.6	it was on a flight recently. So I give a lot of talks lately. I've been invited to speak all over
1:48.7	the country and lots of energy, lots of positive energy. So that's good news. Everybody should hear
1:54.7	about that. Lots of people happy to see me. Lots of people happy to learn more about critical race
2:00.4	theory. Lots of people very angry about critical race theory and the related topics and all over the
2:06.0	country. And so typically I do most of my reading on these flights which I'm flying all over the
2:12.8	place. And recently I was on a flight to probably Wisconsin or something. I don't remember where
2:19.1	I was going for sure that time. And I was reading, I was reading one dimensional man for the,
2:24.0	I don't know, the third time that's Herbert Marcus' book. And I just kind of got sick of it and
