Summary

Ravi sits down with Brandon Brown, CEO of The Mind Trust, to explore the groundbreaking education reforms that have elevated Indianapolis into a national example of excellence in public education. From charter schools to innovative community-driven models, Brandon shares how educators and advocates have harnessed the three pillars of success—autonomy, accountability, and leadership—to build a sustainable, bipartisan coalition in support of transformative change. Ravi and Brandon then delve into the evolving political landscape and emerging forms of school choice, unpacking how these forces will shape the future of education. Finally, they turn to the future and discuss what true innovation in education means in 2025 and how it can redefine opportunities for students nationwide. Brandon is the CEO of the Mind Trust, which is an organization that is doing a ton of work to transform the Indianapolis school system and now serve as a model for the rest of the country.

under the mayor of Indianapolis to scale charter schools there and bring other innovative practices

0:34.2

and schools to the city of Indianapolis. And as we'll get to, that city is among

0:41.2

the most excellent and innovative school systems in the entire country. And we're going to talk a

0:48.5

little bit about why and whether that approach can work elsewhere. Brandon, welcome to the podcast.

0:54.2

Hey, it's so great to be here.

0:55.6

Well, I have long been a fan of the work that you're doing and the work

writ large in Indianapolis.

1:02.4

Like, wherever I go, like in every conversation I have it, it just seems like people

1:05.6

are always mentioning Indianapolis as the example of excellence.

1:09.7

And I, you know, I'm somebody who went to Nashville in 2010 when Carl Dean was creating the charter

1:15.8

incubator there and there's some great folks doing awesome work over there.

1:19.6

But we ran up against massive, massive political resistance.

1:25.4

And I would say a little bit of a set of just conflicting feelings

1:30.0

from the city about whether they truly wanted to move forward with reform. And that has

1:33.6

kind of stalled some progress that that city could have seen. And it could have had a trajectory

1:38.4

like Indianapolis. How did you manage to keep a bipartisan coalition together in that city for pretty sweeping reforms?
