Summary

The 1900 Galveston Hurricane struck the island of Galveston, Texas on Saturday Sept. 8th, 1900 as a Cat 4 storm, causing15-25 foot storm surges and killing somewhere between 6,000 and 12,000 people. 0:42.4	Galveston Hurricane.
0:45.0	In the process of research in a story like this,
0:48.0	a number of things happen to you.
0:50.0	The first being an overwhelming sense of sadness
0:52.0	at the sheer magnitude of human loss and the natural
0:54.7	urge to want to glean something from the story that might be useful for the future.
1:00.3	How much comes down to human failing and how much comes down to other factors is often hard to discern.
1:06.0	But in this case, much of this human tragedy could have been avoided had those in charge listen to the warnings.
1:12.0	The city planners should have been looking out for
1:13.7	people's best interest and their safety when they were asked numerous times to
1:17.7	build a sea wall. Then there was Isaac Klein, the chief meteorologist for Galveston, who firmly believed that no storm of any
1:25.1	magnitude could ever harm Galveston, and who was dead wrong.
1:30.1	His professional opinion was largely responsible for the lack of concern that Galveston showed toward protecting its citizens from any future storms.
1:38.0	He was the sole person responsible for issuing the warnings, and had he acted in time in the right way many thousands of lives
1:45.2	could have been saved but he saw no reason to order an early evacuation in fact
1:49.8	research hasn't shown me that there even was an evacuation plan.
1:54.0	That would have been his responsibility, working in tandem with the city government.
1:58.0	He had built what he and others thought was a strong beach house,
2:01.0	five blocks in from the beach beach with 15 foot high pilings
