Summary

Ravi kicks off the episode with a sharp take on the latest headlines, from FEMA’s alarming lack of hurricane preparedness and the fragility of U.S. supply chains to the growing indicators that the country is headed towards stagflation. He also reflects on new reports about Elon Musk’s drug use, the rising political influence of tech elites, and what the new film Mountainhead suggests about this current moment in time. Jamie Hodari, founder of Industrious and now a senior executive at CBRE, then returns to the pod for a wide-ranging conversation on the future of work and community. Ravi and Jamie discuss the acquisition of Industrious, the growing tension between autonomy, connection, and fulfillment, and the risks and possibilities of an AI-disrupted labor force. Welcome to The Lost of Bate, a Show for Political Eclectics. I'm Ravi Gupta. And in a little bit, we hear from my really good friend, Jamie Houdari, who is the founder of Industri, one of the world's largest co-working companies that was recently acquired by CBRE, which is the largest real estate company in the world. And now, Jamie is now a senior executive over at CBRE.

We talk about that transition, the acquisition, and then we talk about work and the knowledge

0:27.8

economy and more tactile work and the blue collar versus white collar and community,

0:33.7

a ton of different subjects. But before we get there, I was off last week and I'm got a notebook full of

0:40.7

random things that I've either read or witnessed. I'll just give you a few of them. I watched this new

0:46.3

Jesse Armstrong movie called Mountainhead. Jesse Armstrong is the creator of Succession. And this is a

0:51.2

movie all about a group of tech billionaires who are up in a mountain

0:57.1

somewhere in like Colorado or somewhere. And they're kind of trapped kind of up there as

1:02.7

their like tools are all like making their way through the world and causing all kinds

1:08.4

of political unrest and stuff like that. It's an interesting

1:11.4

movie. I would say that it's a little too heavy-handed from my tastes, but it has prompted

1:16.4

some commentary online. And one of my favorite takes is from our friend Bradley Tusk, who's been on

1:21.2

this podcast before. And he pointed out that there were a couple problems with this movie. He said,

1:26.9

the first problem with the premise is that it's just wrong. Yes, they're incredibly powerful tech CEOs, and that's why we need laws and lawsuits to rein in their power. And then he named some of what those laws should be. But he says, compare the movie to reality. The tech CEOs are not the true powers. Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos are all supplicants to Donald Trump.

1:45.4

He says Bark, and they immediately turn into circus performers.

1:48.8

So, you know, one of the premises of the movie is just that these guys basically control

1:52.8

the world, don't care about politics and things like that.

1:55.4

And so Tusk takes issue with that premise.

1:58.6

Tusk also later in the piece writes, and we'll link to this in the show notes, that there isn't this like techno libertarianism, which like pervasive in the movie.

2:07.4

There's a lot of banter about it and this like anti-democratic tilt to tech.

2:11.4

And Tusk says that's not true of the founders I work with.

2:14.3

And I tend to agree with Tusk, at least at the sort of the entry level
