So today, Artie Jules and I are going to talk about coercive treatment, psychiatric care, austerity, and a recent announcement from New York City Mayor Eric Adams, which expands directives for involuntary hospitalizations to include essentially a more

generous interpretation of the guidelines for when someone can be picked up off the street by the

NYPD and hospitalized against their will. And so essentially Adams made this announcement,

and he launched this 11-point legislative agenda

that's a real piece of work.

Artie and I wrote about this in a piece for the nation called Is Eric Adams Bringing Back

the Asylum?

And thank you to our editor, Alana Pocros, for working with us on that and for letting

us highlight the fact that the darkness of this plan cuts a little bit deeper

than a lot of the initial reporting has really actually gotten a chance to get into.

And recently, Artie Jules and I can't seem to stop finding ourselves discussing the fact that

it feels very much like we're living in the forever 19th century.

And if you're a longtime listener of Death of death panel or reader of health communism,

you'll know that we're going to talk about this within the context of the history of

institutionalization. And there are just so many echoes in Adams' rhetoric and in the structure

of this announcement that just betray how little people know about the history of policing,

who is part of the body politic, who is a part of the we, who is entitled

to public space, and really whose society is for. So we're going to talk about the history of

policies directing police to remove poor people from public space that not just Mayor Adams,

but also New York Governor Kathy Hochel seem painfully ignorant of. And we're also going to get

into the details of what Adams

is actually proposing and the context of some of his claims to talk about this broader
