Summary

Kristen Joy Emack is a photographer and educator who lives and works in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She holds a degree in Latin American and Caribbean Studies. She is primarily a self-taught photographer. Kristen recently won 2nd place in the Cambridge Art Association National Prize Show, curated by Steve Locke and Camilo Alvarez, and is a recipient of this year's Mass Cultural Council's Photography Fellowship grant. Her work has been published in PDN, Rangefinder, The Library Journal and The Sun Magazine. Before the age of the cell phone, the birth of a child often spurred the purchase of a camera.

I suspect that the Kodak Reflex 3 that now sits on my shelf was the first camera my father purchased around the time that I was born

and which served as the family camera for years.

These cameras have been the means by which a personal documentary of a family's life

have been created, which would have been impossible over a hundred years ago.

Now events big and small, extraordinary and mundane

can be memorialized and shared in countless ways.

But those photographs can also play a role in how a child comes to see themselves,

especially when there is a dearth of imagery that doesn't reflect what they

look like or who they feel they are. Christian Joy Mack has been photographing her daughter,

who is of mixed race, and teaching her to thoughtfully consider more than just her appearance,

but who she is as a young black girl in today's world.
