Last year was a good year for me photographically. I set out to refine my way of seeing,

composing, and creating photographs. And though I wasn't prolific with my image making,

I was certainly much more intentional. And I saw that reflected in the best photographs that I

created in 2018.

Yet, by the end of the year, I recognized that there was something missing from my work.

I wanted to do more than just produce a single good photograph, so I began working on several

personal projects that are less about making a nice looking photograph

and more about telling stories, some of which are very personal ones.

When I saw that my friend and fellow photographer Valerie Zadhan was doing very much the same thing

with her series on artists.

I immediately wanted to sit down and talk with her

and find out how someone who is known as a street and travel photographer

began this series of environmental portraits.

And that's when I thought about this project, the artist and the space.

It's not about the art itself.

It's about the person and their space.

I started talking with a painter named Carl.

I would love to be able to paint and draw like they do.

So I'm always so excited to meet those people.

And then they introduced me to a glass artist from England upstairs.

So I was like, whoa, this is what I want to do, but I want to do it now.
