Summary

The Ataturk Cultural Center in Istanbul was closed down during the Gezi Park protests in 2013. This former symbol of Turkey's revered founding father is today adorned with large photos of its current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who successfully defeated an attempted military coup d'etat on Friday evening and Saturday morning. Some of you might have chimed into yesterday's live Google Hangout on Turkey's thwarted coup. For those who didn't and prefer audio to video, we've adapted it into an episode of our podcast series. WOTR's Ryan Evans spoke with Selim Koru of TEPAV in Turkey, Burak Kadercan of the U.S. Naval War College, Aaron Stein of the Atlantic Council, and Joshua Walker of the German Marshall Fund to try to sort through the violent events of last weekend in Turkey and the heated political aftermath. I'm the Editor-in-Chief of War Warren The Rocks. This is a special episode in which

0:14.4

we try to sort through what happened over the weekend in Turkey. As you probably know by now, there was an

0:30.3

over the course of several hours that the coup is not going to succeed.

0:33.9

Large parts of the military at least stayed loyal to the government, as did the police services,

0:39.2

and perhaps most importantly crowds of ordinary Turks who turned out into the streets and said no and even

0:44.4

stood down tanks in the streets to put their foot down and say they weren't going to

0:48.6

stand for another military coup in a country that has suffered many of these events.

0:53.0

Now this was originally broadcast live on our website as a Google Hangout on Air,

0:57.0

so those of you who got to listen live,

0:59.0

also got to ask questions of our guests.

1:02.0

We put together a great panel of experts to sort

1:04.3

through some really difficult issues that these events raised. Now, the obvious ones are, what

1:09.1

happened exactly? And I don't know if we're ever going to fully understand that and what does this mean for the future of civil military relations in Turkey which has always been a sort of contentious issue.

1:17.5

This also raises the issue of what Erdogan is going to do next.

1:20.5

He seems to have taken this opportunity to crack down on his political

1:24.6

opponents of all stripes and he is blaming the coup on the Gulen movement.

1:29.1

Well this is something you might have heard of before it's a Islamic religious

1:32.3

movement, a social movement that is led by
