Picture the scene, August 2023, Ivins, Utah.

An emaciated 12-year-old boy turns up at the neighbour's house, having crawled out of the window of a home owned by his mother's business partner.

He has evidence of duct tape around his extremities, deep wounds, open wounds, later found out to be the cause, caused by lacerations of being tied up with ropes.

He is malnourished, and it is also later found that those wounds he sustained were treated with a mixture of honey and cayenne pepper.

Now his mother, Ruby Frank, was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,

who, as far as I'm aware, do keep the Ten Commandments.

So it is likely that she told her four

children that according to the Fifth Commandment, they must honour their mother and their father

on pain of divine punishment should they fail to do so. Now, in my mind, honour is earned, not owed.

As it is Mother's Day, I would like to mention that I do honour my mother.

I love her very dearly and give her all due deference because she deserves it.

She has earned it.

However, in escaping the torment of a mother, inflicting these horrible things upon him, in leaving someone

who was supposed to love and protect him and failed, in starting a chain of events that would

eventually lead to his mother's incarceration, did that boy break the Fifth Commandment? Did he dishonor his mother?

If he did so, does he deserve punishment from the Lord his God? If you believe so,

or you can give us a better explanation as to exactly what they mean then by honor in the

Fifth Commandment,
