He keeps the Long War Journal with his colleagues,

and one of his bold colleagues is here to help us understand the Syrian darkness visible is Ahmad Sharawi reporting in these last days on the violence in Suwaita province, southernmost Syria, on the border with Jordan. We're looking at violence said to be directed

against the Druze, who are minority in Syria as they are a minority in Israel and Lebanon.

And throughout the region, they do not have a sovereign state. So they're in all places

simultaneously. What's significance about

this violence is, as of last week, it was reported that it was a dispute between the Druze community

in Syria and the Bedouin community in Syria. Bedouins also range across all these nations. Remember,

once upon a time this was the Ottoman Empire, and there were no borders. They were drawn about 100 years ago by the British Empire

at the close of the Versailles Treaty. However, 100 years later, the different factions

eye each other's territory

as if it was sovereign. It is not.
