Hello from CNN, I'm Joe Beck, with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, March 4th.

Blanket tariffs are now in effect for goods coming into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico.

President Donald Trump's measures put a 25% tariff on goods from the U.S. neighbors,

except for some Canadian energy products, which will

face a 10% tax. At the same time, Chinese imported goods, which already had a 10% tariff on them,

will see that double to 20%. But America's top trading partners are already hitting back,

with Beijing putting tariffs

on some U.S. agricultural goods.

And as CNN's Paula Newton tells us from Canada's capital, Ottawa is also retaliating.

The government here is deciding that they need to stand up to the American president,

but most of all, trying convince Americans and clearly American

consumers, Republican lawmakers, that this is a relationship that should not be broken,

and that in fact Americans gain as much as Canadians from continuing with this trade relationship.

Canada's Prime Minister earlier said his country would immediately respond with

tariffs on $30 billion of American goods, and potentially another $125 billion later this month.

The tariffs come at a time when economic data shows inflation remains stubbornly high, and the

U.S. economy as a whole is on shakier ground.

Trump has paused all U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

That's what a White House official told CNN, and the freeze will impact all weapons and military equipment shipments,

including some that were already on their way.

The move comes after Trump's heated Oval Office argument with Ukrainian President

Vladimir Zelenskyy last week, and one official said the pause will stay in place
