A few months after this shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a friend sent me a link

to watch. It was Bill Moyer's interview with David and Francine Wheeler, who six-year-old

son Ben was among the 26 who were killed that day, and I watched, astounded. Astounded by

their grace, their poise, their depth of being. Before that horrible day in December, the

Wheeler's had been a typical suburban family, never imagining the turn their lives would

take.

And then, December 14, 2012 happened. That morning, a lone gunman shot his way into Sandy Hook

Elementary School carrying three semi-automatic weapons. He shot and killed 26 people, 20

of them, children.

Nine-year-old Nate, who had taken cover with his classmates in the school gym, survived.

His brother, six-year-old Ben, was among the fallen.

A year later, despite their ever-present heartache, David and Francine have found a way to embrace

love and light, Ben's light, trying to affect positive change so that what happened to them

doesn't have to happen to other families. So on a Misty California morning, it was my

great honor to have the Wheeler's join me in my backyard to talk about what really matters.
