Behind the Black, Bob Zimmerman's website.

0:07.2

I'm John Baster.

0:08.2

It's time for a sunspot update, Bob?

0:12.1

Yes, we do this every month.

0:14.0

NOAA issues a graph, updates its graph, of the solar cycle.

0:17.6

The solar cycle of sunspots up and down has been going on now for 250 years, and

0:21.7

they measure it by looking at the sunspots visible on the Earth-facing hemisphere. And so they

0:26.6

published their graph, and then I repost it with annotations to give it some context, because they

0:31.4

leave the context out, usually. And mostly, I add the prediction, so you can see whether

And guess what?

0:40.0

For the last two cycles, they've been wrong, almost 100%.

0:42.5

And they continue to be wrong in this particular cycle.

0:46.0

It does appear that right now the sunspot activity continues to be high.

0:51.1

It's much higher than predicted.

0:53.4

It's much lower than other predictions. But right now,

0:57.9

it is lower than the peak that we had over the summer. But it's stable at this high level,

1:03.9

but lower than the summer. So I think what we're in now is the saddle between a double-peaked

1:09.3

maximum. That's my prediction, which is about as good as the predictions from the NOAA scientists,

1:13.8

which means you shouldn't trust what I say.

1:15.6

But I say, what I think is going to happen is it's going to be stable for the next six months or so.
