Summary

Your skin color evolved at a particular latitude on earth, but migration and modern lifestyles have created radical mismatches between skin types and environments. The result: higher rates of cancer in light-skinned populations and Vitamin D deficiency in dark-skinned populations. In this episode, Jeff and Jake dig into these imbalances and the tension beneficial sun exposure and UV damage.

Welcome to the Commune podcast. My name is Jeff Krasno. Today in the show, my brother from another mother, Jake Laub, and I discuss the science of skin color.

0:21.6

So over gargantuan swaths of time, people's genetics evolve in relation to their respective environments.

0:32.6

And this can be studied in various aspects.

For example, high altitude and cold weather adaptations,

malaria resistance, and lactase persistence. Now, one of the most obvious and visible

0:47.5

adaptations is skin pigmentation of variations in skin color across human populations are a direct result of adapting

to varying intensities of ultraviolet radiation. So in our discussion, Jake and I discuss

1:07.2

how indoor living and migration, both voluntary and forced, have created evolutionary

mismatches. We explore the biological underpinnings of skin color and why it is adaptive to have

1:23.0

darker skin in lower latitudes around the equator, and lighter skins at higher altitudes.

1:30.4

We discuss why there is a greater concentration of UVB radiation near the equator and how

1:36.6

UVB interacts with skin cells to produce vitamin D while also increasing the risk of melanoma.

1:46.8

We probe the cultural dimensions of skin color,

1:50.0

including how and why pale skin went out of favor.

1:54.8

We also discussed the pros and cons of sunscreen

1:58.0

and the various different types of sunscreen.

2:02.6

As always, this was a fun conversation filled with interesting and actionable information.

But before we dive in, I'm thrilled to announce my new commune course, Good Stress.
