Summary

States & Traits of Energy and Fatigue | Ali Boolani As a multi-disciplinary trained scientist, Ali Boolani seeks to understand subjective feelings of mental and physical energy and fatigue as four separate unipolar constructs. With graduate and post-graduate training in applied physiology, kinesiology, psychology, behavioral economics, and artificial intelligence, Ali seeks to understand these moods from a multi-domain perspective. Ali received a BA and MA from Tulane University in International Political Economics, with a focus on behavioral economics. He then went on to receive a M.Ed. from the University of New Orleans and a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University in Applied Physiology, where he focused on human movement and motor control. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Georgia in Exercise Psychology, specifically focused on trying to understand feelings of fatigue. He is currently completing a M.S. in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Johns Hopkins University, where he is focusing his research on the theoretical approaches to AI with the hopes of creating smarter algorithms that may help identify fatigue and prescribe individualized interventions. Ali is currently a tenured Associate Professor at Clarkson University with a joint appointment in the Department of Physical Therapy and Department of Biology. He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, 3 book chapters, and 100+ peer-reviewed conference presentations. His work is currently funded through USAID, New York State, several private corporations and foundations. According to a 2018 survey by the National Safety Council, two-thirds of Americans at work are tired

and fatigued. That means more than 107 million out of the 160 million U.S. workers

0:17.8

are affected by fatigue. The fatigue can be either acute or chronic. It can be a

0:25.5

result of losing sleep. It can be a result of working strange hours. But we know that when we are

0:33.7

physically fatigued, we become more mentally fatigued.

My guest today is here to differentiate and to delineate what is the true difference between mental energy, mental fatigue, physical energy, and physical fatigue.

And he relates it all back to the gut microbiome.

And how the microbiome can shift and change,

1:04.0

giving us either greater mental energy or more mental fatigue,

1:10.0

greater physical energy, or more physical fatigue.

1:14.8

We know that when we are fatigued, we do not have good cognitive performance.

1:19.9

And we also know that catching up on sleep simply doesn't work. We increase our risk of injuries,

1:30.8

increase our risk of problems whenever we are operating from a place of fatigue. My guest today is Ali Bulani, and he has an extraordinary

1:41.6

acumen of training that has led him to the point where he understands

1:48.4

that energy and fatigue are two distinct unipolar modes and we need to understand the difference

1:58.6

between trait energies and state energies to truly understand

2:03.9

how do we foster and identify feelings of energy and move away from feelings of fatigue,

2:13.8

except when we need the fatigue when it's time to rest in the evening.
