Sometimes it feels impossible to slow down. Eve explains how taking time to ask yourself what you need can give you perspective in a hectic world. Eve Lewis Prieto is Director of Teaching at Headspace, a certified Mindfulness & Meditation teacher and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) instructor. Hi it's Eve here, welcome to Radio Headspace and to Wednesday.

Some of you may know that I have a sausage dog or a wiener dog as they are known here in

the US called Pedro.

A few weeks ago he unfortunately hurt his back.

He's okay but we took him to the vet and he was put on strict bed rest with no playing,

which did make him quite sad.

We could only take him out for very short walks and normally he is so full of energy and

bounces around but during those first few days of his injury he walked very slowly and

was clearly in pain.

When I was out with him one morning it struck me how often I can be completely caught up

in my thoughts and how I might try and rush the walk so I can get on with the day.

This time however I couldn't rush, there was no hurrying things along, I had to go at

Pedro's pace.

And as we were walking slowly down the street I started to notice the sensation of my

feet as I took each step connecting with the surface.

And I could start to feel my mind slowing down.

That sense of restlessness in the body was also fading.

The smell of freshly cut grass hit my senses and happy memories of being at home flooded

my mind.

And it got me thinking about how often we don't slow down or take in what is happening

around us.
