Summary

(#210 Replay). We're dipping into the archives for the next six weeks. ON THE WIND is on a new-episode hiatus until August 23, but we didn't want to leave you hanging for so long! So OTW host and founder Andy Schell has put together new intros for some of his favorite interviews of the past. Furthermore, all of these archive episodes have some kind of relevance in the present-tense. If you're new to the show, these are some of the best...if you're an old-hand, you'll love listening again!

--

We've also announced 5 new passages on FALKEN for 2023 - two in February in the UK, the very first trips on the new boat; one cruising the west coast of Iceland; and two more in October 2023 sailing Portugal to the Azores and back again! Those are open for booking now at 59-north.com/2023.

Join us at the Annapolis Boat Show for the SEAMANSHIP FOR OFFSHORE SAILING SEMINAR, hosted by Andy Schell & Nikki Henderson.

And join The QUARTERDECK! Check out our seamanship community platform at quarterdeck.59-north.com.

0:18.7

give it a try and you can see why. Okay, this episode,

0:23.7

again, to kind of continue our theme, I'm going back into the archive to replay some episodes

0:29.0

that had a lot of meaning to me when I first interviewed the person and also have some sort of

0:34.5

relevance today, even many years later. In this case, this was an

0:38.0

interview I did in 2017 with the great Skip Novak. And the reason it's relevant to me now,

0:44.7

well, I should say the reason it was relevant then should be obvious. If you don't know who

0:48.9

Skip Novak is, just look him up. He runs Pelagic expeditions and is a hardcore sailor and mountaineer. He's been

0:56.6

around the world several times, was involved as skipper and crew in the early Whitbread days.

1:02.5

And it's just kind of one of the all-time great hero type sailors. And the reason that Skip has

1:09.4

come up recently is that Chris Kobush, who's been a

1:12.7

skipper for us recently and who will be a skipper for us on Falcon next year with his wife, Sophie,

1:18.8

who's also a skipper. They're going to take turns kind of like Mia and I do, because they have

1:23.0

a small kid at home as well. Anyway, Chris and Sophie most recently worked on Pelagic Australis, the big boat

1:30.4

that Skip had down in Antarctica for the past several seasons. And in fact, there's an awesome

1:36.1

feature in Yachting World about Chris and Sophie double-handing the boat back across Atlantic

1:40.4

from South America to Cape Town at the height of COVID.

1:49.9

Incidentally, Nikki Henderson, our own Nikki Henderson, was supposed to be on that trip with them, was airborne on a military flight on the way to South America, got turned around

1:55.8

mid-flight because of COVID restrictions that had changed during the flight and got sent

1:59.8

back.
