Imagine you're climbing high in the Rocky Mountains.

You're in a belt of timber and thick brush,

kind of scrubby timber that last strip of often quite thick underbrush just below

timberline and above you in a high alpine basin there's a monster mule deer around 10,000 feet in elevation.

Your anticipated shot from the position that you're working toward is going to be long, somewhere

in the neighborhood of 500 yards.

Now the steepness is not a problem. The brush and the undergrowth is your

rifles fit with a suppressor. So here is the challenge. What sort of barrel length are you

going to want to be packing? It should be short enough to carry comfortably, but long enough so as not to cripple your

cartridge's performance.
