For years, Christoph Herblen had dreamed of opening his own restaurant.

When he was finally ready to begin the new venture, one of his biggest priorities was finding

the right location. He looked at a few places near downtown Calgary and eventually settled on a

strip mall, located a bit further out, but still considered inner city.

It's close to transit, located right on a main east-west thoroughfare,

and nearby residential communities, a perfect spot to attract a regular customer base,

or so he thought when he signed the lease in September of 2019.

Only six months later, on March 14th of 2020,

Christoph Herblen was stabbed nine times outside of his restaurant,

which hadn't yet opened its doors for business.

Since his death, Christoph's family has considered all of the what-ifs, wondering if any of those decisions could have changed the tragic outcome. I just, I'll never understand. I'll never understand it.

It's, um, makes me just feel sad and angry and scared.
