About thirty years ago, I was living in a very strange place among very strange people

to whom I was not just strange, but really a freak.

I was living in a small clearing in the eastern jungle of Ecuador, in a place called Tueno,

and I lived in a house with no walls and no floors and no furniture.

It was a mud floor, it was six poles with a that roof, and between two of the poles that

held the roof up, I strung my hammock, and underneath my hammock on a bamboo slab on

the mud floor was my daughter Valerie who slept on the slab while I slept in the hammock.

The people that I was living with were called Alkas, AUCA.

They were stone age people, totally naked.

Most of them had literally never seen a stranger, not just a white woman, but they had never

seen any color stranger, they had never seen any other Indians except themselves.

And so I was to them an unimaginably strange freak because I was for one thing a very strange

color, pitifully pale.

My hair, they said look like Palm Fiber, my eyes looked like a jaguars.

I was a head and shoulders taller than the tallest woman they had ever seen.

And everything that I did was weird.
