Serbia is a country that is regaining its strength here in the early 21st century after it came against NATO in the late 20th century to do with the breakup of the

Soviet Empire and the breakup of Yugoslavia. This is a distant memory for many

Americans. There have been lots of wars since, but it's not a distant memory for many Americans. There have been lots of wars since but it's not a

distant memory for Serbia. So I welcome Yvonne Estradner of the foundation for

the defense of democracies, who's my guide on the Western Balkans.

This is an area of the world.

It is very difficult for Americans to understand because we were not educated in the 20th

century about the differences between these countries and the long long history of enmity.

Right now, the reason we're looking at Serbia in particular is not just events of the late

20th century, but events of the last year and particularly this,

China and Serbia agreed to follow a shared future. This is Belgrade, May 8th

Reuters, as President Xi Jining visited the Balkan country as part of his bid to forge stronger

relations with allies at the edge of the European Union.
