Some overnight breaking news for you since you left your job yesterday evening. New York City

Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted following a corruption investigation at the federal level.

That's according to the New York Times, which scooped this news last night. While the indictment remains sealed,

and the charges are still unclear, the local paper the city reports that he'll be charged with

acting as an unregistered foreign agent. That's after he allegedly took official actions

while receiving donations from foreign sources.

Indeed, the Times notes that the FBI was probing whether Adams pressured fire department officials

to basically sign off on a new high-rise consulate building for the Turkish government.

That was despite safety concerns about that building.

They were also probing whether he got kickbacks in the form of

pricey flights, as well as upgrades on Turkish airlines. And this obviously all comes as Adams

is about to face a heated primary in his reelection. And ironically, as Turkey's president is actually

in New York City for the UN General Assembly meeting this week. Adams and course says he's innocent.

Meanwhile, the White House announced last night that it is putting forward a new proposal for a temporary 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

Top Biden officials worked with France and Arab allies in the region to draw up the agreement at the UN this week.

And the hope, according to a senior administration official, is that during those 21 days, they can negotiate a resolution to the broader conflict.

Don't hold your breath for that one. On Capitol Hill, lawmakers have left town after clearing the

CR. That means no government shutdown on Monday. And this morning in Playbook, we actually

cast ahead a few weeks to the race to replace Mitch McConnell as Senate GOP leader.

The face-off between frontrunners John Thune and John Cornyn has actually been fairly sleepy throughout the summer.
