All had gathered at Barton Park for breakfast before they were due to leave for their trip to Whitwell,

when Colonel Brandon received a letter which seemed to greatly distress him.

He announced he had to leave for London,

but wouldn't explain why to the great annoyance of Mrs Jennings.

She suspected it might have something to do with his secret daughter, Miss Williams.

He apologized to call off the trip, but the staff at Whitwell wouldn't admit the

group without him. So they decided to take a ride through the countryside

and the carriages were called.
