Diapers. Not my thing. I have things, my own things, but diapers are not on my list of, you know,

things. But I get it. I can wrap my head around how someone's erotic imagination might land on

or land in diapers.

Most kinks are about power, most of us dread and therefore can't help but fantasize about

powerlessness.

And diapers obviously symbolize a stage in life when we were profoundly powerless.

And our fetishes form actually pretty early in life.

Sex researcher Samuel Hughes, who has studied kinks and fetishes and their

formation, describes early inklings towards kink, typically taking place before the age of 10,

an attraction, a draw, a fascination, often without the words or concepts to understand it,

and often without sexual arousal. And while we don't understand why one person's erotic imagination

might seize on diapers,

while another person doesn't, it's not like that other person, that person whose erotic imagination

didn't seize on diapers is off the hook. Their erotic imagination was busy seizing on something else.

Turns out there's just no way to control for the effect seemingly random objects, materials,

fabrics, and power dynamics can have on us. You know, we used to think tools, language,

morality, empathy, even culture, were uniquely human traits. And we know now that they're not.

They have all been observed in other animals. But you don't see squirrels running around in latex cat suits carrying riding crops.

Kinks may be the only uniquely human trait we have left.
