I was thinking about Mother's Day on an airplane on Sunday on Mother's Day as I sat with my phone in my hands, texting with my son's mother, wishing her a happy mother's day. And then when

the plane took off, I got out the dead tree copy of the New York Times and loved it. I'm a big fan

New York Times, but a subscriber forever. But I love being on an airplane with the New York Times or with any paper or with a book

because there's no Wi-Fi or I'm not willing to pay for the fucking Wi-Fi.

And suddenly you are reading like you used to read before the Internet and cell phones and

Twitter came along and ate your brain or ate my brain.

Now I read a paragraph or a sentence in a book or in newspaper and then look at my

Twitter feed.

I read another paragraph, look at my Twitter feed.

But up in the air, I turn my phone off and I just devour the paper.

And this Sunday on Mother's Day, as every Sunday I start with the style section because

I am a cock sucker.

And I read Philip Galane's column, social cues, which I love.
