First is a little good news.

Teen pregnancies are right now,

Teen pregnancies almost always being on planned pregnancies and unwed pregnancies,

teen pregnancies at their lowest rate in 40 years.

No thanks, of course, to the politicians, the Republicans, to the conservatives, to the nuts, to the science haters, to the sex fobes,

who've done all they can to drive the teen pregnancy rate up by doing what, by blocking access to birth control and abortion, but to birth control.

But teen pregnancies lowest rates in 40 years and the abortion rate has not gone up in that time.

What this point and the rate of sexual activity among teenagers has not dropped.

What this points do is increased access to contraception has brought the teen pregnancy rate down, down, down.

Greater access to contraception brings the teen pregnancy rate down.

Who knew, right?

The teen pregnancy rate could be lower if access was easier, which brings us to Plan B.

Plan B is one form of emergency contraception, which is kind of like a mega dose, a big zap of birth control that you take after you had sex without protection or a condom broke or you were sexually assaulted.

It's basically back up birth control. It's plan B. Plan B does not cause an abortion. What it does is it prevents ovulation or fertilization of an egg or an implantation. It is not an abortifacant. And yet, of course, the religious rights screams that it is an abortion pill. There is an abortion pill, but Plan B ain't it. Now, Plan B is safe. Plan B is safer than Tylenol. And in 2005, Susan Wood, who worked as the top women's health official at the Food and Drug Administration and the Bush administration, resigned her job after the Bush administration blocked access to Plan B and other forms of emergency contraception for women under the age of 18. I'm going to read this quote from her.

This decision which left women of all ages without appropriate and timely access to emergency contraception

was a clear rejection of recommendations that have been based on extensive review and evaluation

of the pertinent data.
