Summary

Today's word of the day is 'Monty Hall' as in Let's Make a Deal as in it's MLB trade deadline day. So what goes down during the trade deadline? What are teams doing? Well, the San Diego Padres had a very busy weekend. They made a blockbuster deal for Cleveland Indians starter Mike Clevinger. The Padres were in on plenty other deals too. Will this work out for the team? How did Mike Clevinger make his way out of Cleveland? What are the Indians doing? Last year it was Trevor Bauer, this year it's Mike Clevinger. Bad teams stay bad by doing bad deals (0:06). So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? Someone asked me to update on the sale on the New York Mets now that Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are out of it (19:19). Let's honor Chadwick Boseman, Cliff Robinson, and John Thompson (29:30). Review - The Binge (35:40). Ending the show with some New York Yankees talk. How much trouble is this team in? More specifically, how much trouble is Brian Cashman in (39:10)? #waittosee --------------------------- 'Nothing Personal with David Samson' is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Castbox, Bullhorn and wherever else you listen to podcasts.   Follow David on Twitter: @DavidPSamson  To watch David on CBS Sports HQ visit https://www.cbssports.com/live/ To hear more from the CBS Sports Podcast Network, visit https://www.cbssports.com/podcasts/ https://www.youtube.com/nothingpersonalwithdavidsamson Learn more about your ad choices. Make a Deal. That's that crazy game show where you dress up as some sort of character,

0:38.4

and then you get chosen by the game show host, and then you get to choose what's behind

0:42.7

door number one, or would you like what's behind door number two, and then you win like

0:58.1

of what it is like in Major League Baseball when you're making deals. You want to make deals

1:02.6

because you want to excite your fan base. You want to make deals because your owner wants

1:08.8

you to get better and feels like standing still means you're not getting better, not realizing

1:14.0

that developing players actually means that you're getting better, sometimes keeping

1:19.4

your own players and developing them makes you better. Other times, if you're not improving,

1:26.9

you're going backwards. There are a lot of teams in baseball that don't want to do that.

1:31.3

This is a strange deadline date is August 31st. This used to be the date on the calendar

1:37.9

after which playoff rosters had to be set. So there would be things called August trade

1:44.7

waiver deals. That would come after the actual MLB trade deadline which used to be July 31st.

1:51.4

And those would be trades only of players who had secured waivers which means that they

went unclaimed by any of the other 29 teams. But then MLB said, let's get more excitement

2:03.2

around the trade deadline. People love it. We can do 12 hours of programming on MLB network.
