Summary
Romans 9:1-5 - I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

| 0:34.7 | passage of scripture because it teaches us a broader perspective of how God deals with |
| 0:41.0 | people and how he deals with nations and he's beginning to discuss what role in what place |

| 0:53.3 | You see, because let's put this into a historical context. |
| 0:56.5 | Paul was writing in 1st century Rome. |
| 1:00.2 | Paul himself was a Roman citizen. |
| 1:03.0 | And during that time, Israel was a vassal state, so to speak, |
| 1:09.0 | under the hand of Rome. |
| 1:11.0 | And so Israel was, in essence, in slavery. They were a conquered people. And at the same time in Paul's context, Jesus had come the promised Messiah of Israel that prophets had been speaking about |
| 1:26.4 | for ages and the Israelite people had rejected Jesus as their Messiah. |
| 1:34.1 | They said he's not the one, he's not the promised one of God. |
| 1:37.4 | And so they rejected him. |
| 1:40.0 | And Paul, being a Jew, in fact a Jewish teacher who had converted to Christianity because |
| 1:46.5 | he believed Jesus was the Messiah, is now looking at his own people, the Israeli people, and he's saying, |
| 1:56.0 | what is the situation with them now? |
| 1:59.0 | Since they've rejected the Messiah, what's in store for them them and that's what he's beginning to |
