Hello and welcome to Ways to Change the World. I'm Krishnan Guru Murthy. I'm

this is the podcast in which we talk to extraordinary people about big ideas and

the events and their lives that have helped shape them. I apologise for my

voice. I've got a weird Lauren Gytus but I'm basically fine. But if it doesn't

sound like me that's why. This week the Mayor of London, Sidi Khan, who is seeking

a third term next year and has written a book called Breathe about why tackling

the climate emergency has become his defining policy. It starts with his

diagnosis with asthma as an adult and turns into well a clever preemptive

strike on his conservative opponents who were set to fight the next London

election attacking his ultra low emissions zone or U-Lers which charges the

drivers of older more polluting vehicles to drive in London and which he has

steadily expanded to cover more areas but there's much more to discuss. Today

not least the crisis in policing London, violent crime and the possibility of

course of a Labour government in Downing Street. It's had it welcome. Great to be

with you Krishnan. I mean you have framed this as about the climate emergency. I

mean this is sort of about your your change of heart along the way. Yeah it's

it's not a political memo. It is my personal story and my journey and let me just

say it the outset. I'm not the perfect green activist you know and one of

the concerns I have is people think that unless you're perfect you can't get

involved in this issue but also I'm somebody who when I was a lawyer and I was

offered a salary partnership I negotiated not a pay rise or or the

court and office but a car park space on the road of my firm for myself
