Conversation with the author Josh Dean, his new book, The Impossible Factory.

It's the story of the Skunk works, Lockheed,

and the building of aircraft that were not imagined until they built them.

The P-38, the fastest, best fighter escort in the Second War.

They actually came up with a jet that didn't fly to match the German jet. But then into the

50s, the Lockheed led by Kelly Johnson, a visionary from the Midwest, built plane after

plane special order for the CIA and the Air Force. Especially famous is the U-2.

And here Josh tells us what the Soviets made of the U-2 when it first flew and what they tried to do to stop the U-2

and how frustrated they were until the tragedy of the downing of the U-2

on the eve of a peace conference at the end of the 1950s.
