I'm John Batchler. This is the New World Report, Professor Evan Ellis, U.S. Army War College, commenting on his

return from Bolivia, the election in Peru imminent, the election in Colombia, nearly imminent.

And we go to Mexico where there is no election. However, there is a challenge from the Marina

Party that dominates the legislature, the judiciary, the executive, led by a man who is called

affectionately Amlo, the previous president, Lopez Obrador. The challenge is not directed against

anyone in Mexico. It's directed against the United States of America. Date line, Mexico City,

former President André Manuel Lopez Obrador accused Washington of employing, quote, interventionist and unscrupulous practices, end quote, in order to bolster Mexico's right-wing opposition and weaken his Lopez Obrador's leftist political movement. The remarks come amid escalating tension

rights, Reuters, between the U.S. and Mexico. There's an understatement. Professor, this can

sound like old news. Amlo has been unhappy with policies in the United States for some years now, dating back to his early days as a candidate.

However, he's blasting away now in some fashion that is new to me because this is the work of the president of the country, not a former president.

Is this a demonstration that Amlo thinks that Claudio Scheinbaum is not adequate to the confrontation with Washington?

My sense, John, is that Amlo is trying to weigh in more than anything else because essentially Morena is his party.

This is his creation.

And a lot of the people that have been essentially named by the United States are his people and frankly

part of the corrupt moraine organization that he created.

So what has happened is that in the increasing U.S. pressures against narco-trafficking,

and it's broadly known that a significant number of these governors in various Mexican states are

tied with corruption in different ways.

And so in recent weeks, you've had U.S. naming three of them, naming the governor of

Sinaloa, where the Sinaloa cartel is the dominant actor, Ruben Rocha-Moya, and asking for

his extradition to the United States,

along with, I believe, nine other people at different levels in the Senate of Louis state.
