Summary

Temperatures soared in Tuscany on Saturday and the riders occasionally disappeared in clouds of pale dust as they crossed the dirt roads.

Strade Bianche was a brutal return to the World Tour for the riders and in this episode we assess Wout Van Aert's victory. The Belgian made his breakthrough at the same race two years ago, finishing third behind Tiesj Benoot and Romain Bardet. He was third again last year but this time he made it onto the top step of the podium.

We also hear from Van Aert about the long road back from his crash during the time trial in Pau at last year's Tour de France. Richard spoke to him in Gent in late February before the start of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

Who were the other hits at Strade Bianche and did the race tell us anything about what to expect now competition has resumed?

We also wrap up Remco Evenepoel's win at the Vuelta a Burgos and look forward to what could be a very different edition of Milan-Sanremo with smaller teams, a different route and possibly very different weather to contend with.

My first Tour de France
Our four-part series, My First Tour, is available for Friends of the Podcast. Sign up on our website. In the series, Richard, Lionel, Daniel and François take turns to recall their first Tours – whether it be the first they saw on television or from the roadside, the first they covered or, in Lionel's case, the first they covered in a camper van.

Also, with the peloton set to return to the Giant of Provence this week, we've made the 2016 Friends Special about Mont Ventoux – Heat, Wind and Fear – available for current Friends of the Podcast.

OUR NEW CLOTHING RANGE
We have teamed up with Katusha to produce The Cycling Podcast Collection. The launch range is a cycling jersey and a t-shirt in both men's and women's cuts. To check out the range go to our website.

Bonjour mes amis, it's Richard Moore here. It's fluent already. I'm really integrating in France here as you can hear.

0:34.0

And yeah, with Daniel Freib, hello Daniel. Hello. Do you feel like a new man this week? Not really, no.

0:40.0

Pass a significant milestone at the weekend. How many weeks in a row can we mention your birthday is?

0:46.0

Sometimes marching on towards your half century. Well, you can let me know what that's like. And Lionel Bernie, hello Lionel.

0:52.0

Hello Richard. Hello Daniel. Happy birthday. Belated, happy birthday Daniel. Arsenal won the FA Cup for you on your birthday. That was nice of them.

1:00.0

Yeah. And one of your tips, one Strada Beringke, that was you mentioned Wack Van Art last week.

1:08.0

Did you? Also, yeah, you also mentioned Mac Shaqman who was third. My tips, Sorry on Crow Anderson and Michael Valgrin inspired choices.

1:18.0

They both wrote extremely well. Crow Anderson was quite an early retiree and Valgrin was 30th, 90 minutes, 27 seconds down.

1:28.0

So best not to follow my tips for all the races that might or might not come in the next few weeks.

1:34.0

But we're talking on a Monday afternoon. There's a race on as we speak what races at Daniel.

1:40.0

Tritico Lombardo, I think, which is a sort of three in one. And this is a replacement for the Copa Gostoni, Trevali Varizine and the Copa Bernocchi.

1:52.0

Do they all still happen every year now? Well, they used to take place all in August and they used to be classic.

2:00.0

They used to be referred to as classics in Italy, but they were world championship warm up races back when the world's were in August.

2:06.0

In fact, but then they remained in August even when the world's moved to the end of the season.

2:11.0

And in the last few years, they have been at the back end haven't they in the weeks or the fortnight before Lombardy.

2:17.0

And they've all been squished together for, well, for the reasons we all know.

2:23.0

It seemed like a sensible solution though to that problem.

2:29.0

And I think one that other races might have done well to copy. I mean, two of Fanders and Pirate Rubei.

2:36.0

Basically, two of Fanders, a little circuit, two of Fanders and Fishing on the Cobbles and in the Rubei Velodrome.

2:40.0

I think that would have worked pretty well.
