This is John Batchel. Colleague, Mary Anastasio Grady, commenting on Darcy Rodriguez,

the acting president of Venezuela. Her brother Jorge Rodriguez is the head of the National Assembly.

However, the contradictions from D'Ace continue to pile up. For example, the rumor, the chatter,

that she was the one who betrayed Maduro to the Americans.

And now the rumor, the chatter that she's defying the Americans,

Mary explains it's, you need a scorecard in Venezuela,

but right now, Dulce Rodriguez is balancing two irresistible forces.

That would be Washington and the betrayer behind her.

Well, before we get to that, we should say something about what she did during her time as vice dictator,

because she was also put in charge of Pé de Vesa, and Pé de Vesa being the state-owned oil company.

And when she was there, she had reason to sit down in a negotiating table with Chevron

and with a guy called Harry Sargent, who's sort of an

asphalt magnet in Florida.

And these people have been lobbying the Trump administration very forcefully and spent a lot

of money in trying to get licenses and successfully getting licenses to do business in Venezuela

when the U.S. had sanctions on almost all the other companies, many of the other oil companies, and many had already fled.

So she's got this sort of very congenial face with these oil people,

and they are close to the White House.

So that's why you have this kind of favorable impression of her from President Trump, I think.

And now, what is she doing in Venezuela? Well, it's very well rumored in Venezuela that she's the one who gave up Maduro. And so she needs to protect herself from the Chavistas who are really mad that the U.S pulled this off uh so she's trying to on the one hand

tell president trump she's doing everything he wants her to do and on the other hand telling the
