Mark Carney's embassy to Beijing to secure trade that can make up for the difficulties

with the United States under the present understanding from the Trump administration.

Charles gives us numbers and makes it easy to understand why this ambition by Mr. Carney

is very ambitious, very, as in maybe not likely.

Here's Charles to explain.

Well, I think that that's certainly an impression that is being given by the Carney government.

Of course, Carney will also be going to India and there are various other deals afloat.

He just finished a visit to Qatar to get money for investment for, I think,

primarily Canadian infrastructure to reorient our trade from east to west as opposed to north

to south to the United States. But, you know, Carney's ambition is within the next decade to double the non-U.S. trade.

And it's seen that China would be the place where this could be achieved.

But practically speaking, Canada's external commodity trade to China is less than 5%, as opposed to, as I said, about 70% or currently 67% with the United States.
