Summary

Scouting Mars for Helicopters and the Search for Alien Life. Guest: BOB ZIMMERMAN. Scientists are scouting landing sites for future Mars helicopters in areas containing near-surface ice, potentially for future Starship missions. Research suggests liquid water may have existed on Mars three billion years ago under protective ice sheets. Recent SETI results analyzed billions of data points without finding definitive alien signals.

I'm John Datser with Bob Zimmerman, who keeps the website behind the black.

0:20.3

We're headed to Mars.

0:21.2

You all recall that Mars has a thin atmosphere, and there were big questions whether you could be, whether you could use that atmosphere to fly a helicopter.

0:31.6

Well, Bob, what's the latest on helicopters on Mars?

0:35.5

Well, you know, ingenuity successfully proved it could be done.

0:38.8

And so there have been periodically images taken by Mars reconnaissance orbiter by scientists looking

0:45.1

at potential, and this is what they label it, potential rotorcraft or helicopter landing

0:51.4

sites.

0:52.2

And when these come up, I often post them behind the black,

0:56.0

because, you know, that's of interest. Someone's thinking about doing a helicopter mission.

1:00.3

Well, I've done this once with a helicopter image within the Starship candidate landing zone.

1:08.0

And I said, well, that's interesting. Someone's thinking of doing this, maybe flying on

1:11.7

starship. When a second image showed up this week, I immediately decided I got to see if I can

1:18.1

contact the scientists who requested that image to find out the deal. And I did this. So I contacted

1:23.9

the guy. His name is Debraia. He's a scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Arizona.

1:29.5

He says they don't have any deals with Starship.

1:33.2

And in fact, they're not dealing with Starship at all.

1:35.4

And they don't have anybody from the ingenuity team yet on their team.

1:39.5

But he and a bunch of others in their spare time are, let me quote, performing what people do

1:47.6

a decade before anything else happens in our spare time in the interest of moving the idea

1:53.8

forward. They're asking for images looking at areas. And so the area where Starship wants to land

1:59.3

is an area that interests him as well
